Don't EVER use any Registry "fixer"

Just to add to Frank's excellent advice, you may want to retrieve the
data first since even though Repair Installs usually don't mess things
up, Stuff Happens. Also the Repair Install might be ineffective.

You can retrieve the data by:

1. Booting the computer with a rescue system like Knoppix or a Bart's PE
and transferring the data to an external hard drive and/or burning
directly to CD/DVD.

2. Removing the hard drive from the original computer and putting it in
a machine with a working XP install as slave. Copy the data off using
the working XP's Explorer.

Here is a brief explanation of how to use Knoppix to do this job:

Knoppix is a Linux distro on a live cd. You will need a computer with
two cd drives, one of which is a cd/dvd-rw OR a usb thumb drive with
enough capacity to hold your data. To get Knoppix, you need a computer
with a fast Internet connection and third-party burning software.
Download the Knoppix .iso from www.knoppix.net and create your bootable
cd. Then boot with it and it will be able to see the Windows files. If
you are using the usb thumb drive, right-click on its icon (on the
Desktop) to get its properties and uncheck the box that says "Read
Only". Then click on it to open it. Note that the default mouse action
in the window manager used by Knoppix (KDE) is a single click to open
instead of the traditional MS Windows' double-click. Otherwise, use the
K3b burning program to burn the files to cd/dvd-r's.

Have you tried a couple of fixes yet?

The first is to try Last Known Good Configuration (LKGC). Boot to Safe Mode
by restarting your computer and repeatedly tap the F8 key until you see the
Boot Menu which has a list of options including Safe Mode and Last Known
Good Configuration. Use the arrow keys to select LKGC and press the Enter
Key. See if that will restore a working registry.

If not then follow the same procedure to boo to the menu and select Safe
Mode. If you can get tot he Desktop go to Start button->Help and
Support->Pick a task->click on the link to System Restore. See if you can
use System Restore to revert back to a time prior to the problem occurring.
Just go back one earlier restore point if you can.

If that doesn't work try a Repair Install. Michael Stevens has instructions
here http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

But as Malke mentioned in an earlier post see if you can backup as much as
possible before you run a Repair Install. Generally they work well but there
are circumstances where they don't.
