I run XP with sp2. Few days ago the welcome screen was replaced with the
classic Windows logon window. Even though I have Use the welcome screen and
Use fast user switching enabled, I still don't get the welcome screen at
startup. I have 4 user accounts set up (all with passwords) plus the guest
account. Any clues?

Are you logging into a domain? If then the settings of domain are
preventing you to use the welcome screen.
If that not be the case then try:-
'Restore XP's Welcome/Logon Screen'
Under Win XP Fixes- http://www.dougknox.com/

tried the dougknox fix, but it found the standard msgina.dll was in use, so
no repair was effected. after a restart, still have the same problem - no
welcome screen at startup!
