Weirdness when setting up new network

I've just set up a new network between 2-home computers. Somewhere a while
back, my old network stopped allowing me to use the network printer and
access shared files. I'm not sure exactly what that happened (perhaps
deinstalling zone alarm?). So, I finally got around to setting up a new
network. I'm still having the same problem. What's weird is that I'm the
administrator to the home network. However, when I try viewing the
workgroups on my network, I get the following message: *Network Name* is not
accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this
time because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept.

Any suggestions as to where I start in tackling this issue?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Update...more specific information:

Running XP3 on desktop and notebook; connecting to the Internet via DSL
router (notebook is wireless > Linksys WPC54G 2.4 GHz 802.11g).

Running AVG anti-virus and using Microsoft's firewall.

Have tried troubleshooting advice at http://winhlp.com/wxnet.htm and
discovered:

1. Unable to turn *Server* service on (Error Message: Could not start the
server service on local computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file
specified.)

2. Unable to turn on *Computer Browser* service on (Error Message: Could not
start the Computer Browser service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The
dependency service or group failed to start.)

Hi
Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local
traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should
be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers
on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party
Firewall instructions.

Thanks for the advice/links Jack!

The only firewall running on both computers is Microsoft's (no 3rd party
firewalls).

I can ping both machines as well as the router address and I've perused the
pertinent links you provided without finding a solution.

I've even tried researching the error messages from my last post and trying
suggestions without any success.

This is a head-scratcher!

Larry, thank you for the links!

I tried removing Zone Alarm using the cpes_clean.exe tool. However, I
received a message stating: This application has failed to start because
VSUTIL.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this
problem.
Come to think of it, I seem to recall using this process to remove Zone
Alarm months ago. Just to be sure, I thoroughly searched my hard drive for
the file VSUTIL.dll and could not find it.

I next reset my the TCP/IP protocol per the KB 299357 article (used Mr. Fix
it method).

Nothing has changed.

To recap:

1. I have two computers on the network. I can ping both computers from
either computer. Both computers are running XP3 and are connected to the
Internet via DSL router (wireless notebook using Linksys WPC54G 2.4 GHz
802.11g).

2. Have tried troubleshooting advice at http://winhlp.com/wxnet.htm without
success.

3. The desktop computer curiously omits the *My Network Places* icon when
accessing the *Start* menu. In addition, when clicking the *View workgroup
computers* once I manuever to *My Network Places*, the following error
message is received:
*Network Name* is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
if you have access permissions. No more connections can be made to this
remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as
the computer can accept.

4. Accessing *View workgroup computers* from the notebook computer reveals
that the workgroup is setup--but no computers within the workgroup are
visible.

5. Attempting to start the *Server* service yields this error message: Could
not start the
server service on local computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file
specified.

6. Attempting to start the *Computer Browser* service yields this error
message: Could not
start the Computer Browser service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The
dependency service or group failed to start.
I have looked at KB 827328 (Error 1068-Error Message When You Try to Turn On
Internet Connection
Sharing). However, that didn't seem to apply to my situation as I have no
problems connecting to the Internet via both computers.

7. I have performed anti-virus scans (AVG) on both computers. I am also
running Spybot, Spyware Guard, Spyware Blaster and CoMoDo BOClean on both
machines and as far as I can tell, there is no malware affecting either
machine. Microsoft's firewall is on both machines and setup properly as far
as I can determine.

There is good network troubleshooting help on the net for weird problems
like this one. Try these:
http://www.chicagotech.net/
http://networking.nitecruzr.net/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp

Another thing you could try is to copy and paste the complete error message
into Google. I tried entering -

No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time
because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept.

and got a lot of possible solutions. Try that with each of the error
messages you quoted.

Good luck

Thanks Larry. I'll check out those new links.

I spent a couple of hours last weekend doing the exact thing you recommended
(Googling the exact error message) and quickly grew cross-eyed over a 3-hour
time span in finding possible solutions.

I will try again soon....Taking a break after 6-hours of concrete work on
the driveway today!

I will post the solution once I find it.

Search your hard drive (making sure to look in hidden and system
folders) for srvsvc.dll.

This *should* be in %SystemRoot%\System32. If it is not in the System32
directory, copy it to System32 from %SystemRoot%\ServicePackFiles\i386.
If it isn't there, you'll have to copy it from your Windows CD.

Thanks Lem for your post!

My System32 folder does contain srvsvc.dll (it is identical to the one in
the /ServicePackFiles/i386 folder).

My System32 folder does contain srvsvc.dll (it is identical to the one in
the /ServicePackFiles/i386 folder).

Take a look at

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters

and confirm that there is a REG_EXPAND_SZ Value named ServiceDll with
its data set to %SystemRoot%\System32\srvsvc.dll

Both the Server service and the Computer Browser service should be in
the netsvcs svchost.exe group. When that group is started, the name of
the dll for each service named in the group is found in
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\<service name>\parameters

I can't believe that your system would run at all if somehow svchost.exe
itself was the "file not found" so I assumed that the "missing" file was
srvsvc.dll. If srvsvc.dll is in the correct place, perhaps the pointer
to it in the registry has been corrupted.

If that's not the answer, then I'm out of ideas.

For more detail on the above, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056

Well...there is no
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\Parameters
folder--only a lanmanserver\AutotunedPerameters folder whose REG_SZ value is
not set.

However, there is a \lanmanworkstation\Perameters folder that does contain
REG_EXPAND_SZ where the Data is set to %SystemRoot%\System32\wkssvc.dll.

Running Tasklist /SVC yields 6 instances of svchost.exe. Services are:
1. DcomLaunch
2. RpcSs
3. AudioSrv, BITS, CryptSvc, Dhcp, dmserver, EventSystem, helpsvc, HidServ,
lanmanworkstation, Netman, Nla, RasMan, Schedule, SENS, SharedAccess,
ShellHWDetection, srservice, TapiSrv, Themes, winmgmt, wscsvc, wuauserv,
WZCSVC
4. Dnscache
5. LmHosts, SSDPSRV
6. stisvc

Other items that may prove insightful:

Both the Server Service as well as the Computer Browser Service "Path to
Executable" is:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Services\srssservice\Parameters
contains REG_EXPAND_SZ whose data is set to C:\WINDOWS\System32\srssvc.dll

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters contains
REG_EXPAND_SZ whose data is set to %SystemRoot%\System32\browser.dll

Lem -- thanks for the link. It didn't work (but then it did!).

The link's instructions had me install the service *File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks*. I was unable to do so since it was already
installed. Another dead-end I thought....

HOWEVER, then I had the bright idea to simply uninstall that service and
then reinstall it. That worked! Everything is back to normal. Apparently,
that service became corrupted (it never occurred to me that the service could
become corrupted). If only I would have tried that first, it would have
saved me (and you) a lot of headaches.

Thank you again and thanks to everyone who volunteered their advice in
helping me with this network snafu!
