weird XP networking problem

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I am totally stuck.

I have a home network with internet access. Two machines with XP Home and
one with Win2K Pro. Until last week, all could talk happily on the network.

I brought my laptop home from a customer site and now it is unable to see
any
other computers in the workgroup. And the other computers can see the
laptop,
but cannot access any of its shares.

In terms of TCP/IP, the laptop seems fine. It can ping the other machines
and
they can ping it. It can get out on the internet. And it can ftp to the
Win2K machine.
The problem seems to be only in Microsoft networking.

And the damned thing was working last week.

The most annoying thing is that I am certain I've seen this problem before
and found
out what caused it, but I have no recollection of what it was. Any ideas?

Update - a friend solved the problem for me!

The "node type" of my network card was set to "Peer-Peer". This means that

it was trying to use only WINS for NETBIOS name resolution. It will not
broadcast.

I went into the registry and changed the setting to "Hybrid" and rebooted,
and

everything worked. Not sure how it was changed to "Peer-Peer", as there is
no

place in the XP GUI to change it, but that's what caused it.

I'm having a similar issue that occurred roughly two
weeks ago after the introduction of the Blaster virus.
After I installed the patch, I have not been able to map
a network drive to a friends server meanwhile I can ping
it and also access it via other software like Oracle.

Help! Where in the registry did you make the change?
Does your change apply to dial up connection?

This was only affecting machines in my workgroup. As I recall, the setting
was:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters\DhcpNo
deType

IF this is set to "2", you are only set to use a WINS server, not broadcast.
Change it to 8 and reboot.
