I am using Windows XP professional.
I opened the first program or window (Internet Explorer)
and it opened fine but it does not appear as an icon in
the main toolbar. I have tried to manipulate the
toolbar (from Right Click start toolbar -> properties,
from desktop Right click -> properties -> appearance,
resizing it, changing the order of the
appearance of the rest of the quick launch icons but the
bigger icons that denote that a window is open do not
appear. I know it sounds like a beginner's problem but it
has me puzzled.
The only way I can toggle between opened windows is by
pressing the Alt + Tab keys. Minimising the opened
windows does work but I want to resolve this problem due
to the nature of my work (I have to use the toolbar to
toggle between the opened programs).
Please of anyone knows please take me out of my misery.
Thank you in advance.

The toolbar displays on the taskbar and is a storage area for shortcuts. It
does not display taskbar buttons for open programs.

Those buttons should be appearing on the taskbar though. Is your toolbar
too large to see the buttons on the taskbar? Try resizing the toolbar to
make more room for the open program buttons (unlock taskbar first).

A reverse problem of what you're describing has shown up in these groups
where open windows have a button on the taskbar. Minimizing them makes
their button disappear. Impossible to bring them up again without Alt+Tab.

This problem is discussed on Kelly Theriot's website:

Scroll down to "Taskbar - Programs aren't Minimized in the Taskbar" and
check it out. There is a link to a REG file that fixes the problem. It
might help you too. Set a system restore point before using the REG file.
