I just successfully updated to the latest catalyst and mmc versions for
aiw.8500dv. Everything works fine and checks out as installed.I used the
Sasha process to update with a clean install. However, in windows update
list of successful installs, there is an entry for "ATI display software
update released AUGUST 15, 2002 installed by device manager." How can this
be explained as I have the recent 3.9 catalyst installed and working well?
The only thing I can think of is after I uninstalled everything and rebooted
to safe mode to remove some system32 files, xpsp1 attempted to reinstall
like it usually does, but this time gave the message that it couldn't
because files were missing and gave me the option to cancel which I did. I
then removed everything associated with ati just to be on the safe side
using driver cleaner and the detailed manual process. I rebooted and
installed all the new stuff without incident...............Is it possible
that the aborted xp attempt may have registered with device manager to show
a non existent install? Any comments or explanations appreciated. Thanks

As a guess, I would assume XP has installed the default driver for ATI that
is included with it (XP) to run the video card until you can get the latest
and greatest. It's definitely prefferable to using the default 'Standard VGA
driver'.

Actually, it may not be preferable to the Standard VGA driver, PB, since it
may prevent the updated driver from installing. What you want to do,
snowball, is prevent Windows installing its ATi driver when booting after
installing the card (cancel out when it wants to). Then it will install the
Standard VGA driver by default, and you should be able to run the new driver
installation successfully. Don't forget you also need to install the
capture driver for your AIW! Despite ATi's recommendations to the contrary,
the best installation routine still seems to be to install the capture
driver first, don't reboot, install the display driver, then reboot.

Thanks for the advise. The driver xp attempted to install was not the
default ati, but my previous version 2.3 catalyst. windows update wizard
shows a sussessfull update. My check of my system shows 3.9 catalyst
successfully installed along with everything else, and I can find no
indication of 2.3 anywhere. I guess my question is how accurate is windows
update, and why would it show as successful when it was cancelled?

98 does. XP will keep bitching at you until you give it something that
it likes--it doesn't _have_ a "Standard VGA" driver.
