Weird taskbar entry - how to get rid of it and its file?

I've got a task-bar entry that depicts a silver star at the left margin.
Clicking it displays a small popup with:
1. The top blue portion display a white X on maroon background and "Close" popup
2. A "Retrieve Failed" string centered horizontally and (almost) vertically
3. An "OK" button.

Clicking "OK" causes the popup to reposition itself to the center of the screen
Clicking the "X" does the same thing

I think this nuisance first appeared when I received an update from Adobe for Adobe Reader, but I'm not sure about that.

I'm running WinXP/SP3. Any ideas about how to get rid of it? (It survives reboots.)

Thanks in Advance,
Richard

What sort of menu does right clicking it give?
