Weird sharing problem on Windows Home Edition

Hi All,

I've made a small home network, consisting of a (wireless) router, a
desktop with XP home and a laptop with XP Pro. Both comps can access
the Internet just fine and the desktop machine can access the laptop
through Network Places etc so that the guest laptop can be browsed.

However, the laptop cannot connect properly to the desktop. Shared
folders can be mapped and accessed without any problems, but
connecting through 'Network Places' etc results in an access denied
message

Now the way that XP systems access other computers is by using the
guest account. I can fix the problem by changing the guest account
permissions on the XP Home machine to administrator. Obviously, this
is not the preferred solution. The strange thing is, and this might be
a clue, is that if I look at the shared folders properties on the XP
home machine, they report the OS to be XP PRO, not XP Home. That
doesn't seem to be normal.

Any clues or ideas? TIA.

Dirk

The XP pro machine needs to set permissions under the sharing tab
XP home has no security but XP Pro needs to be configured to allow specific
users access.

Yes, but the XP PRO machine can be accessed just fine (out of the box,
so to say). Its the Home machine that refuses the connection. To
complicate things, it only refuses connection if you try to access it
through 'network places' etc, not if you directly map a drive. So it
has to do with access permissions to default shares (C$ etc)

In My Network Places run the Network Setup Wizard. Be sure the
machines are in the same workgroup.

Thanks for the reply, but that des not solve the problem. The machines
are in the same workgroup. There is a small handy utility called
'shed' (see http://keir.net) that can be run to detect all shares on
the network. Only if I give the guest account administrator rights
does shed properly show all shares (IPC$, C$, ADMIN$, etc) on both
computers on my network. Since I can ping, connect, access files, etc
on the XP HOME computer from the XP PRO computer, networking obviously
works fine.

Problem solved ! A suggestion to all with XP network problems. Check
the status of the various services. 'server', 'tcp/ip netbios helper',
'computer browser' should be on (the tcp/ip helper was turned off on
my machine for some reason). Still have to find out how this relates
to IPC$ or C$ though
