weird problems with external drives

I'm running XP pro sp3. Whenever I hook up my external hard drive (via USB)
it reads it, and even sees all the folders. However, when I try to open the
folders, it goes to an hourglass. I've waited hours for it to open, but can
only close the folder. It then reboots explorer. I've also tried to hook up
a DVD burner, but it doesn't recognize the drive in any software that uses
it. How can I fix this?

External DVD burners may require their own drivers to be installed
prior to connecting the unit to the PC.
