The latest bunch of patches created some "forever scanning" and
"install it again" behaviour a few W2k machine of mine, too. And 100%
CPU usage because of svchost; althoug this could be unrelated to
patches themselves and due to low bandwidth / excessive antivirus
payload.

In these cases I usually skip automatic installations (unchecking the
proper box) and go directly for updates on
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

The problem presented may be like mine with Win2K sp4...that
update.microsoft.com (the all-in-one page) freezes at "Checking for
updates on your computer". The page goes dead while this spinning bar
made me think the website was actually checking. It takes about an
hour of this for an error message to come up. Mine was 0x8DDD0009,
which I don't see in the troubleshooter. Help anyone?

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp
seems to still work.

Marco's suggestion didn't help me. I had gone directly to updates; the
page stopped.
Now trying to "repair" IE6.

This happened to me, too (althoug I don't have the error ID written
down), but then I tried again after a reboot: it took a really long
time to do the check (very old PC) and I had to stop unnecessary tasks
to ease the scan, but at last it worked.

Althoug error messages are different It may be worth having a deep
reading at http://support.microsoft.com/?id=818018

Good luck!

I had the same problem. When I tried to use wiindows update my browser
would hang up without loading anything. I managed to fix the problem by
making my way to the page
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp. It took me a
couple of tries to actually open this page.

Next, look over on the left hand side of page and click on windows update
"troubleshooting". My problem was fixed when I downloaded the scrptiing
engine 5.6 which is available as a recommended download.

Hope this works for you. I was stymied for a long time.

firewalls like zonealarm antispyware antivirus blocking you maybe or a
connection problem
