Weird Problem

I have 1 computer that resolves the name of a server to the wrong IP address
when I ping by the computer name. It's only this computer that does it and
it resolves the IP address to an address that has never been used. I check
the host file and there are no entries in there. The weird part is that
sometimes it resolves the correct IP address.

any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jasper

Does the server have a dial up or RAS interface?

It does not but I did find out what happened. It was picking up one of the
IP address in a pool of address for an VPN connection to our firewall even
though nobody is connected. Why would it do this? I had to stop and start
the Routing and remote access to release that IP address.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Yep, just as I figured. If you will use the DNS snap in on the DNS server
properties sheet, interfaces tab put in only the internal IP that DNS should
be listening on.
The reason this happens?
DNS will create a host record for the machine name for every IP that DNS in
listening on.

Do you mean put the IP address of the DNS server itself on the Interface
tab? If so, than that is there already there.

Thanks,
Jasper

I think this article will help you understand what is going on. Even though
this is only a VPN connection it has an IP address and the DC will register
its addresses in DNS.
