We recently noticed som eweird behaviour
- Double-clicking Add/Remove programs resulted in nothing
- opening NT Explorer gave a blank (greyed out) left side, so the drives etc
were not visible.

These both seemed like fairly trivial problems, but upon installing a
program which created Services, the services woudl not create. I tried
several times to no avail.

Upon suggestion from someone, re-installing IE would solve the Add/Remove
programs probllem. It did & also solved the NT Explorer problem.

The software was then successfully installed & services created.

I am perplexed as to what the problem was with the OS? And how it came to be
in that state? I'm also perlexed as to how re-installing IE solved it.

Can anyone shed some light?

Thanks

It's possible dll version mismatch or corruption caused the problem.
Reinstalling IE would replace those mismatched/corrupt files.

Thanks. I had sort of guessed it some some windows dll..

Is there a reason why it could get this way? I'm not sure what activity has
been done on the machine, but I know SP4 was added at some stage. Could
there be another reason?
