Weird Network Error Between XP and 2000

I run a network between XP and 2000 at home, with a
crossover cable linking them directly. My problem is that
when I try to transfer files from the 2000 machine to the
XP machine, the files start transferring, then the
connection goes dead after a few small files, sometimes not
at all. All of a sudden I get "Cannot copy <filename>: the
specified network name is no longer available", then when I
try to connect to the mapped drive again, it says "An error
occurred while reconnecting z: to \\Desktop\C

Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already
in use.

This connection has not been restored."

And I have to reboot the computer to connect the two
machines again, then after a few minutes it happens again,
and I have to reboot again, and so on.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Find whatever is causing your network drops. Bad cable, NIC,
hub/switch, etc.
