Hi All,
Was hoping someone might be able to help with a weird problem I'm
having trying to setup a manual internet connection....
I had to change motherboards in a PC running winXP Pro. Since I
didn't want to re-format, I chose the "Repair" option to get windows
running again. Everything seemed to go fine: all the programs were
still there, emails were OK, etc... However, the new motherboard only
has 1 serial port (the older motherboard had 2) and I noticed that the
modem wasn't detected. I setup the modem again, which now uses serial
COMM port 2 (it was installed on port 1 for the older computer). The
modem installs correctly, and I can query the modem OK from the
properties section.
The problem I'm having is that now I need to re-create the dial-up
internet connection, and Windows won't let me do it!! I follow the
"New Connection Wizard" choosing "Connect to the Internet" >> "Setup
my connection manually" >> and on this new page the first 2 options
are shaded out. I can only select "Connect using a broadband
connection that is always on". This is no good, as it's a standard
56.6K modem that I need to use. There is no network card installed at
all in the computer.
Does anyone have an idea what's going on? I suspect something has
gone amiss when using the "Repair" function: maybe windows doesn't
like the fact that I only now have 1 serial COMM port and that the
modem is on port 2 istead of 1? I manually remapped the COMM port to
#1 (in botht the BIOS and through Device Manager), but I'm still
getting the shaded out options.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I don't want to resort to
formatting the computer if it can be avoided.
Thanks,
Mj.
