I am experiencing several strange behaviors in an updated IE6 as follows:
1) Windows update goes to the update page and allows me to scan for updates. On install of the update/s the EULA appears and on acceptance takes me to the download/install screen. At that point we stop dead - no error messages. If I cancel the update I get this message:
"MS IE has encountered a problem and needs to close"
Using Netscape (oops is that heresy...) I was able to navigate to the IE updates page and successfully download and install the Oct 2003 cumlative patch. This did not resolve the problem however.
2) In a web based mail situation, I open an e-mail which has embedded links. When I click on a link, a child windows opens but the destination page never loads. If I stop the transmission and refresh then the page will display. Using Netscape (here we go again) I see no odd behavior in this scenario.
3) When I came here to post this message, I was able to navigate the discussion group. But, when I clicked the "new post" button, the child window hung without a display. In this instance, refresh did not work - pretty sure I got the MSIE has encountered and error problem. (I am posting using Netscape.)
4) On some secure web pages, clicking links results in the same problem as described in #2
Suggestions???
PS I have scanned for viruses using current defs and the PC is clean.....
