Weird IE and My Computer problems

I recently installed XP Pro as an upgrade from Windows98. Since then I have
not been able to open IE or My Computer unless I am in safemode and log on as
an administrator. When I am not in safe mode and I click on the IE icon my
computer freezes for a few seconds and Dr. Watson's Post Morten Debugger
appears saying that the programs needs to shut down. In administrator mode,
an IE window opens however it seems that I do not have a network connection.
I know that my broadband connection works since I am able to log on to my
messenger however I cannot open a IE window. I have already installed SP2. I
ran scannow but nothing happened and repair install did no good. Can anyone
help me with my problem?

Hi, Anthony.

Why do you keep starting new conversations about the same problem? This is
at least the third one I've seen. Other users have offered suggestions,
but, by starting a new conversation, you are dumping that historical context
and making new readers start from zero again each time.

I've read the other threads. None of them mention any basic facts about
your system: Make and model of computer (or motherboard, if you built it
yourself)? How much RAM? How many HDs and what interface (SCSI, IDE,
SATA...) they use? How are they partitioned and formatted? What kind of
Internet connection (dial-up, ADSL, cable?) and modem or other hardware?
No, we probably don't need ALL that info, but we need SOMETHING to keep us
from heading down a blind alley. The more we know about your system, the
better equipped we are to help you - and you are our only source for that
information.

HOW did you do the repair install? Did you use a retail WinXP Pro CD-ROM?
Or an OEM CD? Did you follow the instructions in KB article 315341?

I agree that your symptoms sound weird. But the repair install should have
eliminated all the prior weirdness and given you a fresh start. Tell us
more about your upgrade from Win98. How did you do that step? What kind of
WinXP CD-ROM did you use to do that? Did it go smoothly, or did you have to
solve some problems? Are you sure that your hardware meets WinXP
requirements? Do you have WinXP-compatible drivers for all your hardware?

You've been fighting this problem for at least a week now, Anthony. You
might solve it sooner by backing up your data and doing a clean install of
WinXP. Don't bother to back up Win98; you'll be retiring that, anyhow.
Don't bother to backup your applications; you'll need to install those from
their original media after you get WinXP running. But YOUR data doesn't
exist anywhere else, so be sure that is safe and that you can restore it
after WinXP is running.
