weird dancing little square like a tick tak toe board in the video when I
import them into moviemaker

mpeg import to movie maker and playing other files in media player yield a
strange dancing square divided up like a tick tack toe board with a solid
round dot in the upper square.

it is small but really annoying! this has happened on more than one file...
is this a codec issue? weirdest thing I have seen inna while

Is it always in the same place (approximately) in the video?

You have probably installed the evaluation verion of the
Elecard MPEG decoder and it has expired...this is what
it does to you to make you pay (it's not free).

Check Install/Remove Programs to find out.

the little box dances around it is really irritating! I suspect this codec
got loaded to the system when downloaded some demo software as I have not
gone out of my way to ever download other discrete codec's...

it was an elecard mpeg codec I got with a demo program went to tools
options and unchecked the box for it.
all is well

Good deal. Thanks for letting us know.

It now appears that Elecard has a .264 CODEC,
which is pretty popular right now, so this issue may
start making the rounds again.

I hadn't seen it for a few years - the last time was
when folks found out that Windows did NOT come with
a MPEG-2 CODEC for their DVD's and downloaded the
Elecard without paying attention to the license msg. that
comes with it.

ok it is gone from movie maker but I can not for the life of me figure how
to rid media player of it.... tried looking under tools etc...

Start>>Control Panel
Sounds and Audio Devices
Hardware tab
Scroll down to Video Codecs
Click then Properties
Select Properties tab of Video Codecs Properties
Select misbehaving CODEC then Remove
NOTE: something may not work after you do this...
it's hard to tell...create a restore point first

ok.... i notice that the files are named not the same as they are in the
movie maker remove part...
