I set up a RAID1 array a couple of weeks ago and it's been great. Yesterday,
I upgraded the CPU on my A8V Deluxe from an Athlon 64 3200+ to an Athlon 64
X2 4800+. (Yes, Santa was good to me this year!) I used the stock CPU
cooler with the fancy heat pipes because the one I had been using
(http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/aop-6400.html) is only rated as safe
for up to a single-core Athlon 64 3800+. The new CPU cooler is a good deal
louder, so I enabled Cool-and-Quiet in the BIOS.
The Cool-and-Quiet feature does not play nicely with my RAID1 array. It
causes the two drives in the array to become out of synch with each other.
Disabling the Cool-and-Quiet feature fixes the problem! As soon as I shut it
off, my RAID1 array is flawless and rock-solid again.
This is pretty freakish, so I'm wondering if anyone here as experienced the
same thing and, if so, if anyone knows of a fix. My system was dead silent
before so the new CPU fan is loud by comparison. I really don't care for the
idea of leaving CnQ disabled, as it really does help with the noise level.
I'm almost tempted to reinstall my old super-quiet CPU cooler and take my
chances.
