weird connectivity issue

i'm having all sorts of weird issues, and I'm hoping someone can help.

If I'm connected via dsl, IE is a dog connecting to sites. Using Mozilla Firebird is much, much faster.

This didn't used to be the case - connectivity used to be instant for me. I don't know what possibly could have happened to change it, although it's possible that things slowed down after one of the many IE patches were installed.

But here's the kicker. If I VPN into work and then access the internet, connectivity is back to normal. In other words, as fast as it used to be.

Also, accessing newsgroups in OE works no matter what.

What in the world could be going on here? Is there anything I can even check?

thanks in advance,
paul

Hi,

Do you have a firewall running ....

If so try using IE without the firewall running (disabled).
If IE is working fine without the firewall check the configuration, as I bet
you have blocked 127.0.0.1 (localhost).

Best of luck in finding the solution....

Hi Token,

Thanks for the suggestion. I turned off the firewall, but that didn't help.

Again, one of the weird things is that Firebird opens pages nearly instantly, while IE takes forever. This didn't use to be the case, and I don't know what I've changed other than installing some required security updates.

Any other suggestions?

I don't have any advice for your problem, but do turn your firewall
back on.
