I just upgraded my computer. I only kept the old hard drive.
I formated the drive and installed a fresh copy of windows xp.
It ran fine for a few hours as I was reinstalling various programs.
then it started acting weird, it gets to the screen with the bar with
lights rolling across the bottom but never gets pass that. if I hit the
reset button, I get the start normally, safe mode, etc. I select safe
mode and the computer boots up. I shut down by clicking on restart the
computer and the computer start up just fine, actually boots up within
seconds of the Screen with the bar on the bottom..
Also, while booting the first time the lights on the bar will stop for
several second and then resume. If I just let it go on the screen
eventually blacks out.
So I can boot into Windows after resetting and booting once into safe
mode and then restarting the computer. Seems like a funky way to get
started. Other than that it runs really great.
My efforts so far:
reinstalled windows 5 times with a fresh format each time.
replace the power supply, replaced the memory, replaced the motherboard,
replaced the hard drive. Basically made a whole new computer other than
the CPU and video card. it is a AMD dual core 64bit 5200+ with a ABIT
motherboard with 2gig Kingston memory.
the video card and cpu are the only two things I have not changed. I
tested the video card in another computer and everything works fine.
Still, I must boot up, reset and go into safe mode and than restart the
computer. It a 7-10 minute start up procedure
I have given up at this point, If I can't resolve it, I will just break
it down and sell off the parts. I have built up several computer in the
last several years and never had something like this happen.
Any Ideas...other than a large hammer fix.
