Weird boot behavior

I have recently been experiencing odd boot behavior.
Sometimes, when I try to reboot, I get the
famous "ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt" error.
Sometimes, however, it reboots without a problem. The
file is on the hard drive where it should be each time I
look, and the boot.ini file seems to be correct as well.

I am currently running a 120-day trial version of XP SP1 I
received with the Office 2003 Beta pack, but was
experiencing the same problems with another license of XP
(non-SP1). I have tried reinstalling fresh after format,
using setup to repair the current installation, and
defragmenting the hard drive, but the problem persists
(intermittenly, of course). Any help would be appreciated.

If the problem persists across different operating systems and is
intermittent, it is almost undoubtedly a hardware issue. Run a
diagnosis on your hard drive (all the mftrs. provide utilities for
their drives). Back up your data and be prepared to get a new drive. If
the drive is fine, then continue with hardware diagnosis - the problem
may lie on the motherboard - IDE connections, memory - or power issues.
If hardware diagnosis is not your thing, take the box to a good local
repair shop.
