Couldn't play a cd-rom or dvd on my notebook today. Checked hardware device
drivers and saw cd-rom drivers missing? Huh?

Rebooted the machine, and now everything is back to normal.

Bug? Worm? Twilight Zone?

Nope. This is getting serious. Having left my computer for awhile, I
returned got it out of standby and, yup, the machine wouldn't recognize my
cd-rom drive again. Went to check out Device Manager, and didn't even see
the usual "DVD/CD-ROM drives" listed! I hit an WinXP restore point and -- so
far -- things seem to be working again... (BTW. The driver provider is MS,
date 7/1/2001 and driver version 5.1.2535.0 digital signer MS Windows XP
Publisher.

What could possibly be causing the periodic disappearance of the CD-ROM
driver/ Cure?

just what brand is this notebook...sounds like you probably don't have a
real quality one...
