Weekly Defender Update Problems?

Hi,

My Windows Defender has not had a new Update since Nov. 6 (Definition
#1.47.15.0) and now this morning when I started the computer up I get the
Defender Icon in my task bar with an orange explanation point on it. When I
double click on it it brings up a screen telling me to check for updates.
But when I do I get no updates.

And, I can't get rid of the icon in my tray.

Any ideas?

Thanks and regards,

Welcome back 2harts4ever,

Go ahead and download\update from here

<http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal>

go to the address specified, and
in the right column, download the 32-bit definitions.

Putting in the definitions from the security portal should fix this.

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

Good luck

Hi Engel,

Worked like a charm! Thanks for the link.

In the past I have always seen on 'Calendar of Updates' when an update was
available for the Weekly Defender definitions. However, I haven't seen any
notices since at least Nov. 6.

Regardless, your recommended link and susequent download did the trick.

I run a daily scheduled 'quick' scan at 8 p.m. Do you think it would be
wise to have Defender check for updates before this scan since they don't
seem to be listing the weekly updates on CoU anymore?

Thanks and regards,

Hi again Engel,

Whoops! I just noticed that CoU put in a notice late last night that
Defender had a weekly update available. I spoke too soon.

Thanks again!

Is there a reason you have autoupdate turned off? Windows Defender should
update via autoupdate.
I like the idea of setting the check before scanning to on, myself.

Hi Bill,

No special reason, but I am going to try setting it to check for updates
prior to scanning.

The overall effect of that setting is probably to add a few seconds or a
minute or two to the length of time required for a scan. If an updated
definition file is found, it will also add some CPU load to the system as
the definitions are checked for authenticity and installed.

I leave that setting checked--not much of a price to pay for having current
definitions at the start of each scan.

Hi Bill,

I appreciate the added information and have now checked the 'check for
updates' button before scanning.

Have a great weekend!
