Papa

Yesterday I downloaded a filtering program called WebWasher Classic v3.3.
The install was painless, but I can't tell whether it is effective or not.
Maybe I haven't given it enough time yet.

I also use AVG 6.0 as my anti-virus program, and AdAware and Spybot for
spyware. My router acts as a firewall. With all of this, I have not been
bothered very much with spam, spyware, or virus attacks. However, just
lately my email inbox has received some objectionable mail, and I am a
little concerned that it may get worse.

Will WebWasher slow down system performance? What do you folks that use it
think of it?

Thanks.

Since you've got Spybot, I'm guessing you're asking about
the freeware Webwasher after reading about it on Patrick
Kolla's links page.

I found it to be flexible and powerful, too much in some
ways and I didn't have time to train it or let it train
me, so I don't run it anymore. There are a lot of cool
settings but I think they take some experimentation, and
meanwhile I was getting unpredictable results in browsing.

But I don't think it would address your original problem
as you stated it, at least not directly:
lately my email inbox has received some objectionable
mail, and I am a little concerned that it may get worse.

Presumably the objectionable mail isn't from anyone you
know.

The new phrase of the wired:
You've got spam.

Which is a whole 'nuther area of chat and Web browsing.
And processor wastage and workplace productivity losses,
valued in the high gazillions.

The freeware Webwasher doesn't have anything directly to
do with spam, though I think I noticed references to other
anti-spam software.

Spammers can get your e-mail address from a lot of sources,
including random address generators. Say, they pick a
domain and bombard it with mail to a sampling of <every
word and name in every known language>@domainname. Just
don't acknowledge receipt requests, don't contact the
sender in any way. Read up on how to report spam and whom
to. Find out if your mail provider has anti-spam features.

Cheers,
Ken
