"the page can not be displayed"(can't find server or DNS error IE) is the
message I get when I try to open one of my favourite sites. The problem
started about a week ago. I checked the setting, deleted TIF and History
folders,Cookies checked the host file, nothing solved the problem. I've been
searching in the KB (884488)
the problem stays where it is!
There has been no problem in opening any other website.
The owner of the page hasn't changed anything, the page gives no problem at
all on a friend's computer.
Make my day!!!!

Hi Joan,
Open your Run command and type this;
ipconfig /flushdns press OK

On the Run Command also;
netsh winsock reset click Ok Reboot your computer and see if that will
help.
Try to be sure your machine is clean from Malware/Grayware by scaning.
HTH.
Please let us know.

I've got the same exact issue. I've tried the same steps as Joan and the
steps Nass suggested, still not working.

I'm trying to access www.likesbooks.com/cgi-bin/rtr.pl

I noticed the problem about a week ago. I've contacted the website owner &
there has been no change to the website. I can access all other pages on the
likesbooks.com domain.

I'm running IE6 with XP SVS PK 1. I've got McAfee ISS 9 (which I had
problems with, but was able to finally get fully installed and was able to
access this page with the new update).

I've done a virus & spyware scan with no infected files found.

Thanks,

Reader

I did what you adviced but, sorry, with no result, this one page doesn't
show up!
It's a maddening experience!
Both Spywareblaster and Ad-Aware found no spyware.
My problem seems not to be a "stand-alone" item so I suppose there must be a
solution to it?

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS

Hi Frank.

I've tried that. I found 2 HOSTS files, one in the SYSTEM 32/DRIVERS/ETC
folder & one in I386. The only address found in both of these folders was
127.0.0.1. Both have been renamed, one to OLDHOSTS, one to OLDHOSTS2.

I am still unable to access the site. I thought maybe it was my ISP, but I
am able to access the site using a computer that is running Windows 2000 and
IE5.

When I try to access the site, the status bar gives me an error
res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm#http://www.likesbooks.com/cgi-bin/rtr.pl

Any other suggestions? Again, this is the only page on the domain I cannot
access & only from 1 of 2 computers I'm using.

Thanks,

Reader

Frank,
There is nothing for me to add to my co-complainer's message.
I had exactly the same experience with the HOST file (the file even had the
same
address) and the website can be opened from a different computer, but not
from my Vaio!

Hi Joan.

I am able to open & browse your site with no problems. Beautiful pictures!

This is SO frustrating.

Joan, one of our posters in another group was suddenly unable to access a
few websites. She just got it fixed and is now able to view all sites
again. For what it's worth, here is an excerpt from her post:

"I shut everything down and hit the linksys (network router) reset button
and voila!"

Just tossing another idea in the hat.

Hi Reader,
Open your Windows Explorer and Locate the folder Temporary Files and Delete
the Folders there but not the Temp Folder itself, the path will look like this
C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Contents.IE5, Delete the sub-Folders
from the Content Folder.
Open the IE Properties and Click on Programs Tab, click om Reset Web
Settings and click OK to confirm your Changes then click Ok to close the
Window.
Reboot and see if you can Access the website.

Hi Nass.

I tried your suggestion, but there was no change. I still cannot access the
site.

Thank you for the suggestion.

To VickiH and Nass,
Thank you for your advice but they did't work for me either!
I wonder if this is the very first time in IE-history that my (our) problem
shows up, there MUST be a solution to it.

Hi,
Go to Start> Run> msconfig> Startup tab, uncheck all McAfee items.

Go to Control panel> Windows firewall. Make sure that the Windows firewall
is enabled.

Restart and try the troublesome site.

If no success with that, re-enable McAfee and contact the helpdesk of your
ISP. See if they can reach http://www.likesbooks.com/cgi-bin/rtr.pl The
problem might be at their level.

Hope this helps,

Hi Don.

Well, I did not try your complete solution, but while in safe mode with
networking, I was able to get to the site. This leads me to believe there
must be some kind of conflict with McAfee & Windows.

I'll have to try contacting McAfee's support desk. I'm wondering if this
was one of the first sites I launched after a McAfee update. They recently
released a new version of their Internet Security Suite and since this
release, I've had a variety of problems (the red x issue that others have
referred to on this board. McAfee was able to replicate my issue, but so far,
I have not seen a fix).

I don't know why it's only one site.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Hi Joan.

Hope you had a nice weekend...I spent a good part of it trying to figure out
this issue.

Well, I think I've solved it. I was able to get my site back by
uninstalling McAfee Privacy Service. I'm not sure if you are using this
software, but I uninstalled all my McAfee software and reinstalled one
application at a time. Once I installed Privacy Service, I was no longer able
to visit my site. Along with this issue, I had an issue with a red X when I
tried to enlarge a picture on the La-z-boy website. Once I uninstalled this
service, I was able to finally view.

I thought it was an IE issue because both the McAfee Internet Security Suite
9 and the August updates came out around the same time. I'm going to report
the issue to McAfee, but thought I would share this with you if it helps
solve your problem.

Good Luck.

Hi Reader!
I have been searching for a solution for the webpage-problem,searched in the
MVP-documents and performed all the actions they advised in this problem, it
didn't give me shiny days! It has been pouring for days in my part of the
world, so the misery was almost complete!!

I'm glad to hear that your problem was solved, I'v had NAV for 6 years now
and there has been nu opdate whatsoever, I tend to blame the MSfirewall
and/or updates. If I uninstall the Norton programme (and reinstall) I'm
afraid my computer will be unprotected????
Any advice?
Joan

Hi Joan,
Did you delete the TIF *folder* and History *folder* or just empty those
folders?

And you can safely run without NAV long enough to see if it's the culprit.
Turn on the Windows Firewall from Control Panel or Security Center.

Try this test *very* briefly because you'll be running with security
programs shutdown...
Startup in Safe Mode with Networking.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=315222 If you can access your
site, a program that didn't load in Safe Mode is causing the problem.
