"Website found. Waiting for reply" BUT nothing happens...

Has anyone encountered IE 6 the following error "website found. waiting for
reply" only to find it timing out? I am not using any special software and
my internet connection is a direct connection to the internet. When I hook
up my laptop using the same internet cable and port on the Linksys router, my
laptop connects to the internet just fine. I've scanned for viruses and
spyware but IE 6 just doesn't want to get out on the web from my workstation.
Any clues or tips to get around this. Thanks.
