Hello,
I'm not sure if this is the right group to ask this question in, but I was
wondering if anyone can tell me what a fair baseline price is for
designing/updating websites? I have always done my own sites, and have now
started picking up a couple clients. Is it better to quote on a per page
basis? Or on a complete site?
Thanks

Jim

I don't think any sane person would promise to develop any
and all Web sites for the same amount, nor any and all
pages. The amount of work will vary widely depending on
the number of pages, of course, but also on:

1. The complexity of the design.
2. The amount of custom graphics.
3. The expense of additional components.
4. The amount of programming and database work.
5. Whether or not the client wants you to find and
initiate terms with a hosting service.
6. Whether or not the client wants you to list the
site with search engines.
7. Whether or not the site will process credit card
payments or other financial transactions.
8. Warranty and ongoing support.

The best approach is probably to estimate how much time
you'll spend in each such category, then multiply that by
an hourly rate. If you don't want to show the client the
number of hours or the rate, just quote them the extended
price. You can divide the extended price by a page count
if you like.
