Is there a webserver other than IIS that can be used for MS XP Pro? For
some reason I cannot install IIS and I need something for local testing.
Larry

Not one that supports the FP extensions. However what are the issues or errors that you are
receiving?

The basic problem is I have Win XP Pro and for some reason it did not
come with IIS 5.0. My retailer is of no help whatsoever concerning this.
I am trying to find some way of getting a version of IIS that will work
with my system and FP2K. Any ideas?

THANK YOU Kathleen.......I've done that and selected FrontPage Server
Extensions in the Details area. The installation is done and I've
rebooted [just in case]..but I cannot find the the control panel to
configure it.
At present my startup webpage continually says "Waiting for 127.0.0.1.."
so something isn't configured right. Also when I start FrontPage it
indicates no server is active.
Can you point me to the information for this? [I did look at further
articles in the page you gave below but didn't find anything relevant.
Many links are obsolete]

You need to install IIS. IIS is the the web server--not FPSE.

If IIS is installed (correctly) you should be able to load the default
site with your browser as http://localhost or http://127.0.0.1

Then install FPSE if you want FPSE fro publishing to the server or you
want the FP(SE) features for your pages on the web server.

If that is installed (correclty), you shoudl be abel to acces the web
site with FP(SE) by selecting open web site and entering http://localhost .

IIS doesn't come installed by default, you have to do that yourself:
http://www.iisfaq.com/default.aspx?View=A144&P=81

I did not receive any errors during the installation of IIS so have to
presume it went in ok.
I have tried accessing localhost. I get the error:
Error Type:
Active Server Pages, ASP 0126 (0x80004005)
The include file '/iissamples/homepage/sub.inc' was not found.
*/Default.asp, line 17

*so there is some configuration error.
I have checked in the Server Extensions Manager and there are new
subdirectories there starting with /LM/WS3SVC/1: but all subdirectories
of this are empty.
I also located in the Services Manager the Internet Information Services
console but it has no control functions.

There should be a control panel for IIS, so where is it?? I need to tell
IIS where my webs are.

Not that I have any virus' but why not be careful!
I get virus signature updates regularly!

I do not have "Internet Information Services Manager" available in Admin
Tools. Just "Internet Information Services" and "Server Extensions
Administrator". Where might this function be? The IIS function in Admin
does not offer much in configuration possibilities.

I did find that folder Inetpub has been created with a subdirectory
called wwwroot. My previous publishing directory created on
installation of FrontPage was WEBSHARE which also has subdirectory
wwwroot and that is where my webs are located. Should I move contents of
webshare/wwwroot to the new Inetpub folder or publish them there? I
presume I could then use that as my 'working/preview' area.

Sorry - I'm just a bit frustrated as the IIS installation did not give
any information other that it completed with no errors. I just want to
test my stuff locally with IIS before publishing.

Larry

You will need to use Internet Information Services to make sure the FP extensions are applies to the
default web site using All tasks.

Whenever possible, you should always publish a FP web, never copy.

I have published one of my webs to Inetpub/wwwroot/myweb
I can view the site using http://localhost/myweb/index.html so that
means the IIS server is running.
When I open the site in FP2K, Tools|Web Settings indicates no server
currently in use.
If I select preview in browser the preview is shown using the file not
using the server. i.e. not localhost.
How do I get FP to preview with localhost?
Thanks for your patience.
Larry

Did you publish the site to http://localhost/myweb/ or did you publish it to
C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\myweb (which makes it a disk-based web and not a server based web)?

I published to the disk-base version (habit). I just tried publishing to
localhost and it worked fine but created a virtual directory which I can
see in the IIS panel but cannot open for editing in FP as not sure where
to find it.

Under IIS MMC, you must select the web and then All Task and apply the FP extensions.

I just put this on the backburner as a more pressing problem surfaced. I
now cannot publish to my live site.
I get the error:
404 Page not found...

404 Page not found Error Page
HTTP REFERRER
(none)
Requesting URI
/_vti_bin/shtml.exe/_vti_rpc
HTTP_HOST
bed-and-breakfast-travel.com
HTTP_USER_AGENT
MSFrontPage/4.0

Any ideas as to what might be causing this?
[just in case I re-ran the Office2000 Repair function to make sure my
extensions were ok.]

Followup - Ignore below. The problem below was a reoccurring one with my
server. Had to delete/repub the web. Fixed.

When rerunning Office2K Repair it advised setting server settings for
whole web would allow anyone to edit and suggested installing server
extensions in the web(s) individually from the IIS panel. Is that what
you are suggesting I do? [I chose global as I am the only editor.]

IIS should have set the extensions globally, however you still have to configure the root web (you
can only have a single root web) under Windows XP Pro.

FYI: under Windows 2000 or 2003 Server, you would have configure all individual web as well, since
each would be a root web.

FrontPage in its wisdom added the virtual directory to the My Webs
option so I can open the live [local] site that way without
reconfiguring anything. When open it does show that IIS is running under
Tools|WebSettings..This resolves the problems/questions I had.
Well - that's been an interesting learning experience. Thanks Mr. Rowe
for your continuing support. You're not paid enuf..-:)

Glad to hear that everything is working correctly.
