When using internet explorer, a popup came up saying an
update was available. I stupidly assumed it was from
microsoft, but now know it is from some bogus site
called Websearch.com. Is this some kind of spyware?
How can I get off my computer completely?

The site appears to want to load a Spyware toolbar hijacker.

Run Lavasoft's Ad-aware from this link:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Please note that Spyware scanners cannot be expected to detect
all types of Spyware, additional action may be needed.

Please post back with your findings.
