windows 2000 professional. on starting up, I get
this "WebScanX.exe has generated errors and will be closed
by Windows" message. A search seemed to suggest that I
have the W32 Bugbear which inhibits my antivirus
measures.Sure enough, I cannot enable my Mcafee Vscan
fully and my computer tends to close down and restart
automatically, sometimes at intervals of a few minutes. I
downloaded Mcafee's cure for the Bugbear but it reported
no sign of it and i'm still getting the error message. The
computer is less than a month old and i have downloaded
Microsoft's updates, including IE 6. One article i read
suggests that the Mcafee product has compatibility
problems with IE 6. All help greatly appreciated; i'm
having too many late nights.

Sounds more to me like McAfee is hosing your system. Maybe there's a
virus there, maybe not. Webscanx [McAfee web scan] is redundant and
unnecessary, I would disable it and rely on the regular McAfee
on-access scan agent... or use www.grisoft.com, which is free.

Whenever there is doubt about whether or not you are infected, run a
second opinion scan from a different AV scanner.
http://housecall.antivirus.com will let you do this.

If you really want to get webscanx working, you'd want to visit a
McAfee support site. There is one at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tvdug and another one at www.mcafee.com
