Hi, I'm using Windows XP Home and IE6. I've been having
this problem a few times off and on but it's driving me
mad tonight.

I will go to a webpage - by whatever means - typing in
the addy, direct from favourites or links from a google
search etc.

The correct page opens for a few seconds and then seems
to move forward to an error page and http:/// (only that)
appears in the address bar.

I have noticed that in the bottom taskbar thingy that
when it starts to move on from the right page it says
something like 127.0.0.1 which I seem to think is
something to do with a proxy? I'm not using any proxy's.

I have used Adaware and found nothing fishy and also did
a full virus check (I have Nortons running all the time
anyway). Can anyone help?

TIA

I would suspect something that adaware cannot find... here are some more
links about spyware for a start. Norton will not find Spyware, even adaware
and spybot can't find it all.

127.0.0.1 is a reserved IP address for your machine, it is always your
machine, every machine unless something drastic has gone wrong. The
"friendly" name for it is "localhost".

Not sure about all versions, but some versions of Norton run a "Proxy"
server for checking email. This runs on your machine and instead of asking
your mail server directly your mail client (OE?) asks the proxy first which
then passes on the request, gets the replies, scans them and passes them
back to the client checked. Sometimes this goes wrong so we generally
suggest not using the email checking facility in Norton, but that's
basically just so you get an idea of "localhost" and "Proxies".

Where this applies is because some spyware may install a "Proxy" to "Spy" on
your activities or deliver ads. That is what makes me think you should also
try spybot and read up a bit. Even if you read up stuff that's not relevant
now it probably will be in future since spyware is a growing problem and
often badly written.

Note: this type hijack indicates an unpatched machine, that is lacking
