Yesterday I was downloading daag.exe and some other documentation from the
msdn site. I was asked to do a survey and agreed. The survey window said it
would activate when I was done browsing the "patterns and practices" section.
when I cloed the site, IE displayed a message that it had encountered and
error and had to close. I did not send an error report, but guesss I should
have. :(

Anyway, the next time I used Outlook Express and tried to click a link in an
email, nothing happened. I tried another email link that had worked sometime
before, but nothing happened with that either. So I began looking for answers
with google. I found a lot of answers. One I saw in several places said to
check file associations and make sure "URL:Hypertext Transfer" was set to
"%windir% iexplore.exe", and to make sure you do not use the "URL: Internet
Shortcut" item. But I do not have any file association labled "URL:Hypertext
Transfer". I tried to create a new entry named "URL:Hypertext Transfer", but
a dialog box pops up saying this action would delete/replace the other URL
entry ("URL: Internet Shortcut"). I did not want to do that. I know this
stuff is in the registry, can I eneter it in there, and where would I look
for directions? I don't want to reintall IE again, that makes me have to
reinstall service packs and patches all over agian, too. TIA

You do too have an association HyperText Transfer Protocol. It's listed
with those that have a File Type of (NONE) or N/A, depending on your Windows
version.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol (NOT URL:Internet Shortcut)
and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Live and learn! Thanks, Frank. I just figured it out beofer I looked in here
again. I was sorting by extension, and when I saw a hint to sort by file type
in my MSDN Library, I tried that and found the gopher, telnet and all those
entries listed as extension "N/A". I could have saved a LOT of time if I had
tried sorting by type before!
