I have an existing Website on my G: drive.
How do I get FrontPage to open it and recognize it as such without importing
it and copying everything to the C: drive?
I just want Frontpage to recognize it and process it and add the files it
needs to add so I can do global edits.
The real key is the ability to do global edits on the pages of the existing
site. (I can already do individual page editing.)

Just use File Open Site and browse to the folder on G: containing the "site" (or your pages)
- if it is not already a FP Site, FP will convert the folder into a FP site

Open FrontPage
If a website opens then use File->Close Site (or Close Web) to close it.
File->Open Site / Web

Set Look In to My Computer, then browse to the folder on G drive that holds
your web files.
You will be asked to add files etc. to convert to a web - agree
The site will open.

I can do File>Open... and open any single page.
File>Open Web doesn't "see" anything. None of the site's file are recognized
as the file type that Open Web is looking for.
It doesn't ask me to add files etc. to convert to a web.
I don't have a File>Open Site option.
I don't have a File->Open Site / Web option.

Use File Open Web (Site is from the newer versions of FP)
- You will only see folders until you open it (the folder containing your pages) in FP

When you are in the File Open dialog box and you have browsed your way
to your site on the G Drive, do you see any files listed at all?

Is it possible that the files in the site do not have a file extension
recognised by FP in the Files of type box (*.htm, *.html, *.shtml
etc)? If all your files had the extension .jsp, for example, they
wouldn't appear until you clicked on the arrow beside Files of type,
and chose All Files.

Just clutching at straws.

File > Open Web
does not see anything special in the folder that holds my Website.
File > Open
has no problem seeing individual html pages.
I can't seem to find a way to tell FrontPage to create a new Website from my
existing files on the G drive without importing and copying them over to the
C drive.

File > Open Web
does not see anything special in my folders containing html files.
The option to create a new web is not offered... unless I want to create a
new one on the C drive.

Yes.
File > Open
displays all of my web pages.

Tell us all the steps you use to open your web on G drive.
Start with "Switch on the computer".

I start the computer.

I click on the FrontPage icon on my desktop. The FrontPage icon has the
following parameters:
Target:"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\FRONTPG.EXE" "g:\my
webs\drewfaber\links\asf.htm"
Start in: "G:\My Webs"
Shortcut key: None
Run: Maximized
Comment: {null}

asf.htm is my personal navigation page. I use it to navigate (via
{ctrl}{clicking}) to the page to be edited.

Or

I open Windows Explorer and {right click} > {edit} any page.

That is how I use FrontPage to edit my existing html.

The problem is I can't perform global edits.
I can't create a new web without importing the G drive information over to
the C drive.
FrontPage insists on creating a new web on the C drive.

Your desktop short cut is set by default to open a specific Page (not a Web/Site) in FP
Either remove the targeted location
"g:\my webs\drewfaber\links\asf.htm"
Or change it to open a Web/Site
If your default web is in "g:\my webs\" or in "g:\my webs\drewfaber\"
Change it to just that If you want to open that FP Web as a default

If you just change it to Not have the default location FP will open w/o opening your web and then you can browse to any web
- And when you create a new web there is Nothing preventing you from typing in a new location in the dialog to be on any drive or in
any folder

There is also a utility to change the default new web location to be say G:\My Webs at

Thank you very much Stefan!
The utility to change the default new web location allowed me to open a
folder when I went to Open Web! Previously FrontPage wouldn't recognize
folders as being worthy of being selected for this operation!
FrontPage "webized" my G webs just fine. I can now do a global edit. I am so
happy I could just {deleted}.

Now, one minor problem:
I use two monitors. My Windows desktop uses both screens to give me lots of
real estate.
When I do a replace in Front Page the replace dialog is so big it won't fit
on just one screen even when FrontPage itself is fitting nicely on one screen.
The replace dialog is not resizable. It refuses to be contained to just one
screen.

To see how this looks, go to
http://compupix.com/test/temp.gif
This is a {ctrl}{print scr} of my desktop.
The task bar is actually on the left side of my right hand monitor.
Front Page is on the left hand monitor with the replace dialog being active.
Notice how the replace dialog extends into the right hand monitor crossing
under the tast bar.
It cannot be resized! The taskbar goes right over some of the buttons. The
replace dialog must be moved around to get to everything.
Even if I move the task bar to another location, the replace dialog still
extends into the second monitor and it will not be resized.
The replace dialog still extends into the second monitor with the task bar
on auto hide.

The ONLY time I can get the replace dialog to be displayed on just one
screen is when I put the task bar on auto hide and use the right hand monitor
for Front Page... then it will fit.

How do I permanently change the size of the replace dialog?

The S&R is a normal windows dialog
- which you can just resize to make narrower by dragging the side of the window

Windows will allow me to make the replace dialog larger but not any smaller
than what I described earlier. I tried grabbing the sides and corners... the
best I can do is still way too large.
