I have just purchased a webcam with microphone which I intend to use with
Windows Live Messenger.

Do I have to install the webcam first and then install Windows Live
Messenger, or

Doesn't make any difference. Just make sure you install the cam software
before plugging the cam in.

The cam will probably work with WLM and several other Live Messenger
apps although possibly not for video. You didn't state what cam...that
would be helpful.

You might try Skype. It is more stable and seems to be easier to setup
than WLM. I have used both and prefer Skype for video calls.

Thanks for your reply. I apologogise for the delay in replying to you but
have been away for a few days.

The cam is a Logitech QuickCam Messenger and I bought it because it says on
the box that it will work with Windows Live Messenger.

I am hoping it will work for live video because again it says so on the box.
