I have a webcam technical problem. Can anyone suggest the best place to seek
help. The manufacturer can't and all the webcam newsgroups are offering
things I neither want nor need!

XP will see and use the camera if the driver works. The manufacturer is the
only one to write such a driver. The only alternative I see for you is to
try one of the Messenger sets, like Windows Live messenger. The options has
a web cam setup that may tell you something.

Thanks - I'll briefly tell the story and see if anyone on this group can
explain it. I have a new Logitech webcam which gives the option of 3 image
sizes. I also have 3 computers. On 2 of them I can use all 3 resolutions but
on the (marginally) more powerful machine if I try to use either of the 2
higher resolutions I get a MS error report and the program closes.

Can anyone explain this please?

Interesting. Not a driver problem per se, but a driver 'conflict' problem.
OK, lets say it's a conflict with the Video card, just for a start
somewhere. (Event Viewer is going to report the problem driver, but let's
say I'm right) I am willing to bet it's in the DirectX stuff.
Go to start/run, and type:
DXDIAG
See if we get an error on something.

Sorry, Mark, Yes. Event Viewer shows:-
Faulting application quickcam10.exe, version 10.5.1.2029 faulting module
umvpl.dll, version 10.5.1.2027 fault address 0x0001212d

'fraid it doesn't mean anything to me!

Problem solved!!

Despite 'No updates available' being reported when installing from the CD I
went to the Logitech website and found qc1150.exe. I rigorously deleted the
original program inc. cleaning the registry and installed this and all is
well. I would like to know why it worked OK on the other 2 computers but one
can't have everything!

Many thanks for your help and interest.

Microsoft Windows XP can have various different "hidden"
configurations or updated DLLs that no one knows about. One reason
that software keeps getting updates (to fix compatibility with
Microsoft "changes.")
