Noreen

have just taken over a company that has its website hosted with a webbhotel,
I now want to do some changes to the site. Pretty new to Front Page and
webbpublishing, so need a little guidance on where I start. I do not know if
webbsite done in front page or someother program originally, access is via
FTP. Do I need to create a blank site in Front Page and then publish the
site from webbhotel to my local computer?

Thanks for help and tips..

Yes.
If the site on the webbhotel has FrontPage extensions, open the site in
FrontPage and Publish to the site on your PC.
If it does not have extensions, then use FTP to download everything to
the site on your PC.

When you have finished making changes, Publish back to the webbhotel.

Hi, have just checked the site does not have frontpage extensions active for
us at the minute, what is the benefit of having front page extensions?

Thanks..

Benefits of FrontPage ext? I suppose the #1 benefit for hobbyist designers,
for FrontPage itself, is that a FP site can be constructed quickly without a
lot of coding knowledge, which is where the FP extensions come in. You can
create a form to send an email (normally the form processor part of this
would involve complex programming), you can include a photo album or
guest-book or Discussion board - most of these are basic features, and there
are third party product equivalents that do a much better job.

However, do note that FP extensions are generally no longer supported on
Linux platform (MS withdrew support some time ago), and hosts are
progressively no longer offering FP ext on their hosting accounts. There's
no guarantee your host (if they currently have the FP ext) will do so in the
future.

Some other points to add to Andrew's

You can create a form to send an email (normally the form processor part
of this would involve complex programming),

As I understand it, this facilty is fairly limited. I have seen posts quite
often asking "Can I save to a database and send an email ?" and the reply
has been in the negative, at least not without further prorgramming
you can include a photo album

The photo album is not the best. I wrote my own in JS, but the free JAlbum
is quite good
or guest-book or Discussion board

These require a bit of work as well
- most of these are basic features, and there are third party product
equivalents that do a much better job.

Ah, I see that all I am doing is agreeing with Andrew, i.e., there are
better ways to do all these

Hi

So it is better if I just active frontpage extensions for the webbsite with
the webbhotel for ease of use in Frontpage (have seen that there is a page
which is a form to fill in and then a button to send - but it's not working).

To be sure I have understood everything correctly if I create a new site
locally on my pc and connect to the remote site via FTP and publish the
remote "live" site back to my pc then I can start working on it.

I can then as well make a backup of this site which I will have locally -
can I just make a copy of this local site to another folder on my pc as a
backup with basic copy function?

It would be better to Publish the site with FrontPage.

Make a folder for the backup.
Open the site (on the PC) in FrontPage, then use
File->Publish Site
Change the "location to publish to" to the new folder. FrontPage will
ask if this should be converted to a website - agree.

When you wish to publish back to the webbhotel, open the remote site
view, then use Remote Site Properties to point back to the site on the
webbhotel. This may be the http address if you have FP extensions, or
the FTP address otherwise.

Hi

I downloaded all the files with my ftp client to a folder on my computer and
then opened the folder in Front Page (got a message about fp needing to add
files for all to work) accepted this and then did a publish back to a local
folder on my computer - however, when I chose to publish to local folder I
did not get any question about converting this to a website - have I done
something wrong?

I opened then this local copy and opened the remote site in fp (FTP), I
amended a file for testing but when I choose view files to publish
(publishing is set to publish changed pages only) I am getting a whole load
of other files that are to be published.

I do not want to publish as I am afraid that I might sabotage the actual
"live" webbsite - grateful for any help..

Thanks...

If you publish to an empty folder the 1st time FP is creating the Web as if publishes

Anytime you open a different site
(than the one you published to/from initially)
- FP will want to publish the entire site
