Web site pages hanging

I installed SP3 about 1-2 months ago. Several web sites since then would
hang for at least 10 seconds when I go to one of their pages, although
CNN.com is now the worst (and maybe the only one) I am having problems
with-it now goes over 10 seconds - it seems to not get out of it anymore. I
did get a Windows update last Friday and it seemed to have fixed it, but
yesterday, the problem came back. My Norton Internet Security was updated
yesterday. I turned everything off on that and went back to CNN.com and the
problem still exists, so I would have to assume that it isn't my problem.
When I try to close down the pages that get stuck, I get the Not responding
status and I cannot end the program. It just keeps opening another error
box. A few times I finally got the opportunity to report the error to
Microsoft and it indicated a 'hungapps' problem. I am thinking about just
uninstalling SP3, but I have no idea if that will cause me more problems.
FYI - I am not a PC guru at all. I can handle uninstalling SP3 or installing
a fix, but that is about it. Any suggestions or ideas?

Problems can result when add-ons, including browser toolbars, are
damaged or conflict with Internet Explorer.

Run Internet Explorer 7 in 'No Add-Ons' mode:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer
(No Add-Ons)

Alternatively, you can create a shortcut on your desktop with the
following target path:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff

If no problems occur in 'No Add-Ons' mode, the problem is caused by one
of the add-ons that load together with Internet Explorer 7.

Problems with Internet Explorer can also be caused by the presence of
viruses or other malicious software.

I have IE6, not 7 (I have no intention of installing that - I tried it about
2 years ago and really messed things up - I uninstalled it and everything was
back to normal.) I do a full system scan every week and I have never had a
virus.

Will this work with IE6?

The procedures also work on IE 6, which is not as secure as IE 7, so I
would think again about malware.

Besides which, weekly scanning does not protect your computer from
infection. (It will hopefully /detect/ an infection.) To protect your
computer from infection, your comprehensive anti-malware software
(protecting against all threats, not only viruses) must start with
Windows, run in the background and be continuously updated.

Ny norton is running in the background all the time. It has anti-virus,
-spyware and -phishing, firewall, intrusion prevention, email scanning. It
gets updates automatically - I think every day. It does start in the
Windows.

If you are using Internet Explorer as your browser, what version is it?

If your problem occurred immediately after updating to SP3, my guess is
the update wasn't done correctly. You may uninstall SP3 by Add or Remove
Programs in Control Panel. When you are ready to reinstall SP3, you will
need to do some prep work first. Here's what you need to read first:

It's important to regularly clear your browser cache (i.e., empty your
Temporary Internet Files). You might want to try another browser.
Firefox and Opera are popular alternatives to Internet Explorer. It's
not necessary, but it's one way of determining if the problem is in your
browser or something else.

You may want to consider ditching Norton, which is known resource hog.
Was it running in the background when you installed SP3? If so, that's a
no-no!
