Web server authentication - problem using IIS on Windows XP Pro

In order to test my website before publishing it with MS Frontpage
2003, I installed IIS on my Windows XP Pro computer. But when I try
using Firefox on that same computer to access:

http://localhost/ or
http:/homebuilt/ (name of my computer)

I am asked for authentication. (I assume that the IIS install leaves a
default web page that I can access.) I do not use a password to log in
and I have administrator privileges.

What username and password does it want? What should I do next?

Also, I cannot access the IIS/SP Pro computer from second computer
over the network.

Also, I cannot access the IIS/SP Pro computer from second computer
over the network.

Also, when I went to [control panel][user accounts] I got a message of
a script error and to continue Y/N. I continued. I tried to repeat
going to [user accounts] but it does not gnerate the error any more.

Still have the problem. More information:

1) I uninstalled IIS and reinstalled it.

2) Networked computers can now communicate OK. I think I had the
firewall wrong.

3) Still cannot access http://locanhost/ from its own computer.
The address bar changes to http://locanhost/localstart.asp

A message box asks for authentication but uses "" for the page/folder.
Enter username and password for "" at http://localhost
[OK] produces:

error '8002801c'

Error accessing the OLE registry.

/iisHelp/common/500-100.asp, line 17

4) in the second or third try, a second messagebox pops up having
"localhost" between the quotes.

More tries and it bypasses the authentication question altogether and
goes directly to the error message.

I will appreciate any suggestions,

FYI:
Here is the answer that I found in
microsoft.public.inetserver.iis and
microsoft.public.inetserver.iis.security
and many other places.

Summarizing hours of searching and copious confused technical
gobbledygook:

-- you can't do it with Firefox, but you can with IE --

I verified that both of these URLs work with my IE6.
http://localhost/ or
http://homebuilt/ (name of my computer)
