Can anyone shead any light on this matter. I have been told this is not a
virus. but it insists on atacking my PC and when I try to remove the folder
C:\Program File\wer_rebates it says access denied. If i go into this folder i
find lots of files and folders. If i delete any of them the imidiatly re apear.
This in my opinion is a virus as it fills my screen with pop ups and other
software to scan my key presses.

that doesn't make it a virus, that just makes it unwanted....

it sounds like you have adware or spyware of some kind... try adaware
and/or spybot search and destroy and see if they can detect anything...

Could it be "program files\weB_rebates" ?
Try
http://www.pestpatrol.com/pestinfo/t/toprebates.asp

BTW, the next time try to google "rebates spyware" first.

It was suggested that he check for the appropriate malware, that being
adware/spyware as the problem is not virus related. However, not knowing
what a virus is he was certain it was a virus. I guess I should have noticed
the AOL address before I tried to help him.

A lot of times, when files are 'locked' as being in-use,
you can log off, then log on as another user and you'll
be able to delete them. Try that if you want to manually
remove this thing. The advice to use tools is good too.

There are two companion programs running which look out for each other
being closed down. One will immediately restart the other if it is
killed.

You need something like process explorer
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml where you can
see and kill the running processes.

After you have killed the first one it should reappear as a child of
the other. Then you can use the "kill process tree" option to zap them
both at the same time.

After you have zapped the running processes you need to go to the
startup tab in msconfig and remove references in there. Then you can
delete the files.

The manual removal instructions on this page tell the user to close
down running processes using the task manager. AFAIK, you can't select
multiple processes in task manager to be closed simultaneously and so
it won't work since a new process will be started as soon as the old
one is closed.

Noted. So much for pestpatrol. Thanks for the heads-up.
