I am unable to get to square one with a web query.

When I enter nces.ed.gov (a legitimate URL) in Field 1 of the "new Web
Query" dialog window, I get an error message that says,

"The address of this site is not correct. CHeck the address and try
again."

Yes, it is the correct address. Why do I get this error. I can open IE to
the URL with no problems.

How do "Internet Connections" in IE 6.0/Tools/Internet Options/Connections
have to be set up for web queries to work? Is this what the problem is?

THank you.

The problem lies in Dialup Networking or some aspect of my Internet
connection.

I have found DUN to be "unpredicable," is the way I would say it. I connect
using Multilink. This give me 100K using two 56Kmodems. This works fine. I
have also setup up the connection to disconnect if after 15 minutes with no
transmission. Somteimes this works but usually it does not.

I have tried changing the deafult Internet Connection from "Never dial" to
"DIal if no connection" present with no change in the problem. It does not
go away.

Pinging to the Interent works fine.

The symptom is that Excel is unable to find the connection to the Internet.
When I select "New Web Query" and then "Browse Web," Internet Explorer opens
but that's it. The IE window never fills and the globe just keeps spinning
forever with the hourglass showing continuously. The only way to recover is
to kill IE by click on "X" in the upper right corner.

So there is some problem with the Internet connection or .

There is nothing else wrong with my DUN setup operationally. Email, surfing
the web, news group uploads and downloads, ...every protocol works works
fine.

The only problem-solving strategies I can think of are:
Uninstall and reinstall Excel
Create a new DUN connection

Does anyone have a better idea?

John
