Just upgraded a Dell laptop (1705) from XP Pro to Vista Ultimate. Now we
can't get onto the web. It tells us the firewall may be the problem, but
with the OneCare firewall turned off it still will not get onto the web. We
don't have any other firewall or virus program running. Any suggestions?

What type of connection, cable, dsl or dial-up? Are you connecting through
a wireless router? If yes, try resetting the router to factory defaults and
starting over with the wireless setup routine. Also, wireless routers
sometimes have a firewall of their own which may be turned on be default so
check to see if that is the case, turn it off and see if you can then
connect. In fact, if you have a wired router, check to see if it might have
an internal firewall that might be blocking access.

you may need a vista driver for the Ethernet card or just replace it with
one that is compatible with vista.
if it is an onboard card you will have to disable it before installing a new
card.

Turns out that during the upgrade from XP Pro Live OneCare got messed up.
Even with its firewall turned off it was blocking web access. Microsoft
worked with me to pull OneCare from the system and then to fix some registry
settings and then pull the new OneCare for Vista back into the system. 3
hours of work and it was back in business.
