I am using a dial up connection to the internet. When i
attempt to use the internet, i can connect to my isp, but
ie does not connect to my homepage and when i attempt to
go to another web site i get the message;

Internet Explorer could not open the page.

I have re-installed ie and the dial up software, but it
has not solved the problem.

I recently had trouble with a pci firewire card. In the
hardware properties it said that the card could not start.
I removed and reseated the card. After i did this, the
firewire card worked, but my internet problem started.

I have tried reinstalling ie and my dial up software with
and without the firewire card installed, but i still
cannot access anyweb sites.

Can anyone help?

Can you try to access the website by IP addresses?
Try 216.239.41.99 (for www.google.com).

If you can get to websites by IP address, check the dns settings.
From a command prompt, type ipconfig /all and make sure that you have DNS
IP address field populated on the Dial-in connection.

Does the firewire card show up as a netwrk card?
If so, try disabling the firewire card and then try it again.

I experienced this problem and if it is the same thing as what happened on
my PC, you're in for a lot of hassle!

Open up a command prompt (Start > Run > cmd > ok) and at the prompt type:
ipconfig /renew

If the IP address renews and the new settings appear, you haven't got the
same problem as I had. But if you get the message along the lines of the
operation cannot be performed as it is in invalid Winsock, then you're in
trouble. Also, try: IPconfig /all, see if the same error appears. I found
an article about this in Microsoft TechNet which says that this error is a
known bug in XP and the way to resolve it is to reinstall the operating
system.

Some userful articles to look at:
