I use this program (v2.04) and faced no problems absolutely, nor it replaced iexplore.exe in my system. BTW, what OS are you using?
IExplore.exe ?
Nope. The .URL may contain the favicon path, and the actual .ico is stored in the Temporary Internet Files.
To preserve the favicons manually,
Visit that site and create a shortcut of it to the Desktop
Right-click the URL shortcut, and Send To > Notepad
Look at the line reading IconFile:
Example:
IconFile=
http://www.google.co.in/favicon.ico
Now, type
http://www.google.co.in/favicon.ico in the browser window and save the .ico file locally.
Change the URL icon using the "Change Icon" in it's Properties sheet.
Note: View > Source can also be used to view the favicon URL.

Preserve the favicons using AM-Deadlink:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ie/favicon.htm
Program looked great as I tested it, but after using it I can't start
my InterNet explorer anymore. The "iexplore.exe" file has gotten a new
icon (the AM-DeadLink one) and I get a "NTVDM" error when running it.
ANyone? Why should AM-DeadLink replace the IXPLORE.EXE file?
Though it was just a "run once in a while" application :-(
All icon links/paths are store in the favorites shortcuts, right?
