Web pages cause IE 7 to crash

I have been running IE 7 for about a year with no major problems
Yesterday all was fine. Today some web sites are fine but a lot of my
normally visted pages cause IE7 to crash with "unexpected error" and IE7
closing. I have tried the obvious of deleting old internet pages, cookies and
forms data. I have obviously rebooted the PC. All to no avail. Some pages
work, others continually cause a crash.
I am running WinXPSP2 and NIS2007. I have also tried ensuring all IE7
advanced settings are default and trying to access the pages with NIS off.
My ISP is BT Broadband.
Anoyingly the affected web pages seem to load correctly on my sons laptop
also using XPSP2 & IE7.
Anybody got any clues?

I cannot connect to a specific Web site when using Norton Internet Security
2007:

1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode?

To start IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Have tried all suggestions with no effect except reverting to IE6 which I
consider a last resort as it has worked perfectly for a year and just started
to misbehave suddenly. The only thing I have done recently was to use Disc
Clean up to compress old files and remove temp files, could this have had an
effect.

nass,

I tried System restore to the day before clean up but it said "computer
cannot be restored to selected date"
I don't kow why - no other info given.
only things done to pc since then have been the clean up, and some normal
automatic NIS virus defs updates

PA Bear

confirmed that symantec fix did not work

I have not uninstalled IE7 yet as it seems extreme when it has been ok for a
year and still is ok on most web pages. I also like IE7 when it works.

further info on crash: when page attempts to load it gets almost there and
normally is visible before it falls over, as if some last item is causing a
problem. IE7 status bar shows "done" in bottom left

PA Bear,

Apologies - I thought I had tried IE7 without add-ons. I tried it again and
yes it works ok without add-ons.
how do i find which unsolicited "new" one is causing the problem and disable
it

thanks

I will chime in while PA Bear having His snooze <G>, perform the below

nass,
the culprit is Norton Confidential Browser helper Object which apparently is
the add-on that drives the NIS phishing protection in NIS2007, as diabling it
removes phishing protection. There must have been a revision to this in the
Live update that down loaded immediately before it started to crash as it has
always been ok up till now.
As expected Norton responnse is that it must be my fault that I have other
add-ons that it conflicts with. They suggest I continue to run without
phishing protection. Typically useless response. How can these bugs be drawn
to the attention of the people who actually write the updates?
Incidentally, I do not understand your reference to updating it by "right
click & select update". When I right click on the add-on, no menu comes up?

Hi Snoop,
I think because you have both IE7 and NIS Phishing Add-Ons running on your
Browser and they collide together causing this crash.
Try to leave it Disable all the Time by highlighting it and check the Radio
Button for (*) Disable and see if the browser will behave in a normal way.
Run the update engine manually do you get any errors?.

I have been running IE 7 for about a year with no major problems
Yesterday all was fine. Today some web sites are fine but a lot of
my
normally visted pages cause IE7 to crash with "unexpected error" and
IE7
closing. I have tried the obvious of deleting old internet pages,
cookies
and forms data. I have obviously rebooted the PC. All to no avail.
Some
pages work, others continually cause a crash.
I am running WinXPSP2 and NIS2007. I have also tried ensuring all
IE7
advanced settings are default and trying to access the pages with
NIS
off.
My ISP is BT Broadband.
Anoyingly the affected web pages seem to load correctly on my sons
laptop
also using XPSP2 & IE7.
Anybody got any clues?

Please begin your own new thread about /your/ problem and IE version.
(There's no way you're running IE7 in Win98.)

I am having a similar problem operating on Internet Explorer 6 and windows
98se operating system, how do I disable the add ons

Disable any/all Norton Add-ons, or...

Contact Symantec Service & Support:
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/index.html; or...

1. Uninstall all Norton software via Add/Remove Programs.

2. Enable the Windows Firewall.

3. Run this removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

4. Immediately install the 30-day free trial version of, e.g., NOD32* or
KAV7**

5. Manually update your new anti-virus application then run a full system
scan.

Do your problems persist now?

[Don't forget to subscribe to your new AV app before the free-trial
period
runs out!]

Running NIS 2007 - Version 10.4.0.13 - the latest version, which was
fine
till an auto live update download 2 days ago. See previous response to
"nass"

:

Are you running Norton Internet Security 2007.4 (see NIS Help > About).

1. Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

If still no joy...

2. You may have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7. I
suggest
that you..,

a. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html

b. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including
Window
Blinds).

c. Reinstall IE7 per
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install,
and using http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as
the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

d. Check in at Windows Update and install any critical update(s)
offered.

PA Bear,

Apologies - I thought I had tried IE7 without add-ons. I tried it
again
and
yes it works ok without add-ons.
how do i find which unsolicited "new" one is causing the problem and
disable
it

thanks

:

Please confirm:

=> The fix posted at
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/nip.nsf/docid/2007021401552536
didn't
help.

=> You're now running IE6 and the problem doesn't persist.
