Today I selected "make this page available offline" in IE6 - first time I've
ever done that - but it doesn't seem to work (I could have saved it as a
complete web page without any trouble however). When I went offline and
clicked the bookmark, it put the URL in the address bar and tried to fetch
it from there. After that, blue screen and reboot.

Is this loss of functionality the result of the recent security updates or
is there something else at play here? Can it be fixed?

It's possible the page you saved for offline use contained scripts or code
that make it want to go off-site to update a part of the page (like a banner
ad) - something like that. Since you are unfamiliar with the offline
viewing function of IE, see this article for more information:

(Note the part about synchronization)

Thanks for that link - I read it and retried the procedure. I still couldn't
get it to work right but at this point there is at least a 50-50 chance that
it's operator error, so I'm going to work with it awhile and post back if
I'm still having trouble. OT - It's interesting after using IE for all these
years to actually be presented with two or three new boxes you never knew
existed.
