all right... our netowrk is basically set up so anyone in the office can sit at a computer and work. however, recently we know there has been a lot of porn being looked at. anyway, we're basically looking at setting up a domain with individual logins for every employee and some form of webpage logging. my basic question is if this is the best way to do it and how would i implement something like this? i have only set up simple networks in my life, so no idea how to do domains and all that other fun stuff.

The cheapest and simplest solution for you may be to buy a hardware firewall
that has a subscription to a 3rd-party web filter like cyber patrol, etc.
Everyone then points to the one device as its gateway and you can specify
which types of sites are blocked.

The next thing is to move to a secure desktop like Win2k or WinXp to force
users to log in and configure the firewall to gather user names when sites
are blocked.

You can continue down this road and put a proxy server in place, create a
domain, etc. - for this you'll probably want to hire a local company to help
you out.

Scott,
All right. We already have a firewall in place that is capable of what you are describing (I think). Almost all of our computers 2000 or XP as well. I can only think of one that is not and is still on the network. I currently administer the server remotely and my access to the firewall is limited for another two weeks before I actually make it into the office, so I still am not sure if it keeps track of log ons... but it is the firewall that let my boss know that porn was being viewed. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.

Also, how do I get all the computers to point to the same usernames and passwords for logging on?

Thanks again,
Kevin

Well, you can create a domain if you have a server, or you can standardize
the machines so they all have the same list of usernames - each person has
an account rather than setting up the machines to log in to a single account
automatically when turned on. Also, remember that if you have XP Home
machines in use then they will need to be upgraded to XP Pro if they are to
belong to a domain.

ok... all of our computers are XP pro, so that isn't much of an issue. the problem with standardizing a login gives us the same issue we have now. we actually need to know who specifically is doing what. all of our computers have a standardized login which we are looking to get away from for logging purposes (as well as a some added security benefits).
