I am having difficulty of late with Web Page errors

I get the following error message when trying to access
normal sites

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable.
The Web site might be experiencing technical
difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser
settings.

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make
sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu,
and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab,
click Settings. The settings should match those provided
by your local area network (LAN) administrator or
Internet service provider (ISP).
If your Network Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft
Windows can examine your network and automatically
discover network connection settings.
If you would like Windows to try and discover them,
click Detect Network Settings
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the
Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to
determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your
Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu,
and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab,
scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL
2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

I'm not sure how to tell if DNS working or not. I only know how to tell
it's not working, e.g. get's errors like you are reporting.

You say you don't have a firewall. Dangerous. If you must run without a
firewall, quickly get all Microsoft updates installed. If you don't,
within minutes/hours of use you will probably have your machine infected
with Blaster worm (www.microsoft.com/blaster).

I *might* be that worm or virus has messed up your DNS. I have a vague
recollection of reading about that. I don't make a point of keeping
track of all the symptoms of viruses/worms. Check your machine with
anti-virus software and check with that vendor's web site for these
symptoms.

I don't know if you are able to reach www.yahoo.com. When I ping that
adddress, I see that it's at 206.109.118.69.

To bypass DNS, try going to http://206.109.118.69 and see if works. If
that works, and http://www.yahoo.com doens't, then DNS is not working.

Assuming your IP address is automatically assinged when attached to ISP
(using DHCP), they will also define the DNS server. Check with the ISP
on this to ensure you are configured correctly.
