I'm trying to get photos from Astronomy Picture of the Day
into a Powerpoint presentation. Every time I try, I get a
message that PPt can't open that kind of file, yet I don't
know how to save the file. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Provided the image isn't copyright protected, right-click on the image,
select "Save picture as" (if available). Save it to a folder on your hard
drive. Open PowerPoint, click "Insert", "Picture", "From file" and browse
to that folder and select the file. Size it as necessary by dragging one of
the four corners (maintains aspect ratios).

I searched for the Astronomy Picture of the Day on Google and it led me to
this URL:

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

All the pictures were JPEG images - right-click the pictures in your browser
and choose Save Picture As...

You can use the Insert | Picture | From File option in PowerPoint to insert
JPG/JPEG images - does your version of PowerPoint not allow you to insert
JPEG images? Also, what's your PowerPoint version? PowerPoint 4 and 95
probably did have flaky JPEG support, but all versions since PowerPoint 97
can import them natively.
