Is there a freeware program that will burrow down into a websit and grab
all the images (ideally with a filter so banners, thumbnails etc can be
ignored).

Internet Explorer, and probably other web browsers:
If the website doesn't allow you to right click and "save image as" or
something like that, you can always click on the image and drag it out to
your desktop or some other folder.

How does that "burrow down into a websit[sic]" (recurse) and download
"all the images", as OP requests?

Does not. Thought he might find this useful anyway. For burrowing, you
can use something like:

spidermonki
intellitamper
candego medusa

Sorry, don't know what-kind-of-ware they are... just a personal list.

Would be nice to check before posting to a freeware group.

And URL's to homepages to *freeware* would be nice too.

:)

In wget's help file one of the examples is:
<Quote>
You want to download all the GIFs from a directory on an HTTP server.
You tried wget http://www.server.com/dir/*.gif, but that didn't work
because HTTP retrieval does not support globbing. In that case, use:

Well, there we have it. Sometimes I get lucky. (I've not used wget.

one needs to be VERY careful with "burrow down and get everything"
settings...you can end up with 2 gigs of crap unless you are sure what
is there....
I prefer something like Mihov's Picture Downloader
http://www.mihov.com/eng/#pd
which will let you load the image links on a page and choose how many to
get.

It works fine on many sites, unless they have some script set up to
reject multiple requests. I collect images of trees and woodgrain, and
Mihov has saved me much effort.
