web graphics

I want to create a site similar to the graphics on the link below. I know
that in order for the site to load more quickly I need to layer the graphics.
I'm having a problem with that though. Can someone tell me the best way to
do this? Do I layer the graphics with the "layer" feature?

Layering the graphics will not make them load faster

Lorisdiner uses JavaScript to determine which images to display
depending on day of the week, and uses tables for layout.

Images must be optimised for the web, using your image editor.

I'm sorry to ask wht I am sure is a dumb question but how would I just get a
table of text to lay on top of a graphic such as that? I added a l ayer but
got weird results/

Add the text to the image in a graphic/image application
or
Set the image as a table or cell background image

Ok - I think I will try the cell background....that sounds like a plan!
